I wrote Anxiety Rx, the highest-rated anxiety book on Amazon. It has helped thousands of people and introduces a different understanding of anxiety — not as a problem of thinking, but as a persistent physiological state of alarm in the body, often rooted in unresolved emotional pain from childhood.

This is the understanding that changed everything for me… and it’s the foundation of the work I now teach practitioners.

 

IT WASN'T ALWAYS EASY. 

I grew up in a world of chaos, where my father’s schizophrenia and bipolar disorder consumed my childhood. It was an unpredictable environment that forced me to grow up too fast and left my nervous system constantly on edge.

As a sensitive child, I developed an anxiety disorder that would follow me for decades.

My anxiety was relentless. It filled my mind with obsessive thoughts and constant worry, making it impossible to feel at ease. There were times I felt completely overwhelmed by it, unsure if I would ever find a way out.

But despite the overwhelming anxiety, I pushed through it all. I refused to let my anxiety control my life. I used its energy to become a physician, a best-selling author, a yoga and meditation teacher, and even a professional stand-up comedian (no joke!). I accomplished so much, but it came at a very high price. 

My anxiety disorder worsened as I got older. It caused me to burn out of medicine, retire early, and struggle to maintain close relationships. I experienced the pain of not one, but two divorces, all because of the overwhelming anxiety and survival physiology that made it impossible to consistently connect within myself or to others.

BUT THEN SOMETHING CHANGED. 

In 2013, while living at a temple in India, I realized something that would reshape everything I thought I knew about anxiety. My anxiety wasn’t just in my mind.

It was a physiological state of alarm in my body — a kind of “body memory” rooted in early experiences — that was driving my thoughts, behaviors, and patterns. And for the first time, I began working with it there.

As I started reconnecting with my body and addressing that underlying alarm, something shifted. Not just in how I understood anxiety — but in how I experienced it.

And that’s when my real healing began.
